LAN Airlines, one of Latin America's leading passenger and cargo airlines, signed a firm order for 50 new eco-efficient Airbus A320 Family aircraft, making it the largest single airline order for Airbus in Latin America.
Initially announced as a Memorandum of Understanding at the Farnborough International Airshow in July, the airline’s request for incremental A320 Family aircraft is part of LAN’s growth strategy for Latin America, serving as new and replacement aircraft for both existing and new routes. LAN has also selected Sharklets for the A320 that start being delivered in 2013.
Sharklets are large wing-tip devices that will enhance the eco-efficiency and payload-range performance of the A320 Family. They are expected to result up to 3.5 percent reduced fuel burn over longer sectors corresponding to an annual reduction of up to 700 metric tons of carbon dioxide per aircraft. This latest development is part of a larger, continuous-improvement program for the A320 Family. The order also includes 10 A321s, a new aircraft type for the airline.
Ignacio Cueto, LAN Airlines' Chief Operating Officer, commented: “Since 2008, our short haul fleet has been entirely composed by Airbus A320-Family aircraft. Through this agreement, we confirm LAN’s commitment to the development of commercial aviation in Latin America by carefully selecting our aircraft based on its ability to effectively and efficiently serve our short- and long-haul flight needs.”
As of today, LAN’s total Airbus orders exceed 150, with more than 60 aircraft in passenger operations today throughout Chile, Argentina, Peru and Ecuador.
“We are extremely pleased with LAN’s continued confidence in Airbus and greatly appreciate the partnership established with LAN over the past 12 years," said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer Customers. "The A320 family is recognized as being the most modern and efficient single-aisle aircraft around and, through ongoing investments, the best continuously keeps getting better.”
With more than 550 aircraft sold and a record backlog of more than 250 aircraft to be delivered to its Latin American customers, today more than 300 Airbus aircraft are flying with 22 Latin American airline customers and operators, representing more than 40 percent of the fleet in service in the region.
The A320 Family (A318, A319, A320 and A321) is recognized as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. With 6800 aircraft sold, and more than 4,400 aircraft delivered to some 310 customers and operators worldwide, the A320 Family is the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft family. With 99.7 per cent reliability and extended servicing periods, the A320 Family has the lowest operating costs of any single aisle aircraft. Uniquely, the A320 Family offers a containerized cargo system, which is compatible with the worldwide standard wide-body system.

On this occasion I would like to tell the development of a trip to Montevideo, I had wanted to try PLUNA services and use the airport in El Palomar, before he returned the entire operative to Aeroparque.
Arrive at airport at El Palomar 2 hours before departure of my flight, check-in what had previously conducted online, but should send the suitcase, when I was in it for safety items are not allowed on board plane. The process to send the baggage was 50 minutes, in line had only 7 people ahead of me, but people (who were 4) charge in 2 counters were too slow and gave a lot of laps to check passengers. Completed the journey to dispatch baggage, came the following, which was circumventing security controls and migrations, unfortunately just when we were about to pass the security check, get a quota of another airline and that the process was much slower.
Once finished everything, and in the departure lounge, we report that the flight was delayed by 30 minutes. Delay was exacerbated after the aircraft all the passengers, inform the captain that we would be 30 minutes on the ground as having lost out the only slot available was at that time, all resigned and the aircraft no could do.
Fifteen minutes after the announcement of the captain, we start with engine start and taxi back to runway threshold, in this case took off on runway 34 of EPA, the rise was smooth and very quiet. I was surprised how quiet the aircraft and its poor distribution of seats, no window coincided with the exception of emergency exits on the wings, seat for which a surcharge if you want to occupy it, the style discount airline cost.
The flight was very short, trying to regain some lost time in 20 minutes, we announced that we are close to Montevideo, and we began the descent, the cabin crew at any time spent at the catering offer or payment which usually provide neither the freeshop cart will be due shortly to be reckoned with.
In service is quite disappointed of this airline, since everything is paid, from checked baggage to a glass of water. Care attendants, at least at the time of loading and unloading was more than friendly, even let me peek strongly predisposed the plane in those fifteen minutes of waiting to make some pictures.
Already at the airport in Montevideo, due to the time of our arrival there was not much movement, migration move took only minutes. I was impressed how well prepared and the airport is functional, not had the pleasure of knowing. With its modern facade impresses the visitor. A small but consistent Airport aircraft movement in the country, when we landed were in a cargo platform B767-300ER American an ATR-72-500 BQB and Iberia A340-300 and several private jets. At that time there were very few aircraft PLUNA therein.
The return flight was similar characteristics, except for the times that were fully complied with, the attention of the flight attendants was also very good, and in this case if they could offer extra payment services.
In conclusion I can say that this airline became a distinctly low-cost airline, which for the same service as other airlines in the same sections end up shelling out more money than if you get a ticket on another airline full. With respect to the Palomar Airport, all I can say is that I have very close to home, given that they are of a military base their building infrastructure to make regional airport, is not thought, ending with a very poor infrastructure, but efficient, since being an alternative to closure of Aeroparque for a few days can not mount a super airport. With respect to the plane and comparing it with another of the same segment I am with him EMB-190-100, for convenience and interior space as the CRJ-900 appears that one is in a can literally, although no longer a plane comfortable for a tall person of 1.80 and be a little more complicated.

And to finish and I was not angry my friends Uruguay, I carry a very nice impression of this country who do not know and who I thought was very neat, clean and people very friendly and welcoming. Maintain such enviable beaches on the Rio de la Plata, because in my country do not have that awareness about the River. It is highly recommended to take a trip to Montevideo. I need to know much more, a situation that I will soon remedy.
