Skywest, el socio de Virgin Australia, recibe su primer ATR-72-500 - Virgin Australia partner Skywest Airlines takes delivery of its first ATR 72-500

La aerolínea australiana SkyWest Airlines recibió su primer ATR-72-500, que es también el primer ATR 72 en operar en Australia. SkyWest operará su nueva flota de ATR-72-500 bajo la marca de Virgin Australia, como parte
de un acuerdo de 10 años firmado entre ambas compañías para crear una red regional para Virgin Australia.
Este primer ATR-72 forma parte de un pedido de 4 aviones de la versión 500 y 4 aviones de la versión 600 más 5 opciones de esta ultima versión, firmado a principios de este año entre por la compañía de leasing Aviation PLC. Los restantes 3 ATR-72-500 se entregaran este año mientras que los 4 ATR-72-600 entraran en servicio en el 2012. Todos estos ATR lucirán el nuevo diseño de pintura blanca y roja de la nueva Virgin Australia.

En un principio los nuevos ATRs operarán en la costa este de Australia, incluyendo las nuevas rutas regionales Brisbane-Gladstone y Brisbane-Port Macquarie. Esta red regional se extenderá progresivamenete en 2011 y 2012 con la incorporación de nuevos destinos. El bajo consumo de combustible de los ATR-72 sustituirá progresivamente a los EMB-170 de Virgin Australia al tiempo que permiten la introducción de nuevos servicios y frecuencias adicionales en las rutas existentes. Los ATR-72 estan configurados con 68 asientos de nueva generación con un pitch de 31 pulgadas y equipados con los últimos motores Pratt&Whitney PW127M.

Australian carrier Skywest Airlines today took delivery of its first ATR 72-500, which is also the very first ATR 72 aircraft in Australia. Skywest Airlines will operate its new ATR fleet on behalf of Virgin Australia, as part of a 10-year agreement signed recently between both airlines to create a regional network for Virgin Australia. Today’s first delivery follows the signature of a contract for 4 ATR 72-500s and 4 ATR 72-600s, plus 5 options, inked earlier this year between ATR and the leasing company Avation PLC. The remaining 3 ATR 72-500s will be delivered this year, while the 4 ATR 72-600s will enter into service in 2012. All of these ATR 72s will wear the new white and red livery of Virgin Australia.

Initially, the new ATR fleet will operate on Australia’s east coast, including new regional routes from Brisbane to Gladstone and Brisbane to Port Macquarie. This regional network will expand progressively in 2011 and 2012 with the addition of new destinations. The fuel-efficient ATR 72s will progressively replace Virgin Australia’s E-170 regional jets while enabling the introduction of new services and additional frequencies on existing routes. The new ATR aircraft are configured with 68 new-generation seats with a 31-inch seat pitch, and fitted with the latest Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127M engines.
